Re: intelligence. I conducted a relevant classroom exercise in a social engineering course months back (and have reported the results a few times). Participants were assigned points that they had to allocate towards a desired mate. The game was designed so that you could either have someone who was “average” (a 5) across all the traits (I believe the featured traits were looks, kindness, intelligence, status, money) or you could select some traits to be above-average at the cost of making other ones below average. The men basically raided status and money to add significantly to looks and kindness in their female mates. Intelligence was normally left at average or “5”. The women fell in two major categories: some wanted above-average intelligence coupled with wealth; others wanted above-average intelligence coupled with kindness. Looks and status were sacrificed to some extent. Now, even anonymous self-reported survey results are plagued by what social scientists term the “socially desirable answer” question and perhaps the women in particular felt that this was the response that was correct for the setting in question (for instance, if female students thought that the professor was smart but physically unattractive, they might feel that this was the right allocation to make for the social context even if revealed preferences in the field would be very different). The other important consideration is that I specified long-term mating in the scenario.
